Turning an Old School Into Our House!
Приєднався 24 гру 2006
We purchased this 1914 Indiana school back in August of ’21 and we’ve been working to bring her back to life! My husband and I are two Indiana kids who’ve spent the last 10 years living in NYC. We always planned on moving back to the Midwest but after our son was born in the spring of 2021, our Midwest plan narrowed to our hometown where both of our parents still live.
The school was active between 1914 and 1934, and then from 1934 to ~1956 it was a barn that housed cattle, pigs, chickens, sheep, and turkeys. From 1956-2021, another family called our school home.
Since we bought this old school, we’ve put in a new roof, waterproofed the foundation, fixed MANY floor joists… And have gone through many dumpsters to clean out 50+ years of stuff that was left inside and outside the school.
We want to preserve and restore as much as possible and we'll continue sharing this school's story as we go!

6 months of exposing & "sealing" our brick walls + the school's FIRST cocktail party!
Переглядів 64 тис.Місяць тому
We've been working over 6 months on the schoolhouse's interior brick walls and I'm so excited to finally share all of this! Like all things restoring this school, the brick sent me down so many internet research rabbit holes and I'm so relieved to be DONE. And relieved that the brick doesn't shed anymore! *The process:* After Brad, our mason, removed the plaster haze off the brick with an angle...
The BEST Discoveries We've Found in the School So Far
Переглядів 135 тис.2 місяці тому
It's been 2.5 years since we bought this school to turn into our house, and we've found a LOT of stuff along the way. Not all discoveries in this old school have been good, but here are some of the bright spots! The last one- just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has left advice, constructive criticism, and ideas for things we haven't thought about on here. Thankful to have so many smart...

This video has been in progress for basically two years now, and so weird to see construction actually starting on it! An enormous thanks to my friend Danny (@CauseyDesign on IG) helping us make our initial drawings, aka playing The Sims with garage plans. And then also thanks to Bill and Bruce from Cooler Design here in Indianapolis for the final prints! Finally- Adam and his crew at Arrow Ear...

This video took me so long to edit, I almost went cross-eyed trying to search and match all the before footage to the now footage, haha. Looking at all the before footage, I definitely wondered many times how we had such a strong vision in taking this project on! Even with all the hiccups and delays, still very glad we are doing it. Also- on the walls such a big thanks to Colin, George, Hugo an...

Out of curiosity, why did you guys make the bedrooms so small?
Great work on the baby, great workmanship. Very cute
Metal detector!!!! Ya gotta do it!!!!!
That looks cool❤
Omg, I remember when you purchased the building. I can't believe it has been 2 years. I'm so excited to see the end result 🎉🎉🎉
It takes a certain kind of people to take it on Consider yourselves the dreamers Good luck
Huge house - haw do you heat it up ?
Very cool!
Wow! Interesting! It's like a walk into the past!
Nice
Love this
I love barkbox! Just opened my dogs!
It is looking so gorgeous already. What a privilege that you are able to restore this beautiful historic building. I do hope your family squeezes every bit of joy and beauty out of it when you can finally settle in. After all this hard work, you certainly deserve it! I have a feeling, when all is said and done, that you will let out the biggest and most satisfying sigh of relief, and then quickly realize how much extra time you have! 😆
I aspire to have the money and nannies to one day do this
Why not make it housing for people in need?
What was your budget? How’s that working out?
Ow amazing. To rebuild it the way you want. I would love that space. Besides the house courses. 😅
Im not seeing any drains on that roof....you dont want water just sitting up there.
Might have to shovel some snow off that flat roof....just sayin
I keep trying to tell people that schools would be great place for seniors,,, there is a kitchen, dining room, gym for excercise equipment, cafeteria, each 2 classrooms could be an apt. Just need bathrooms. Maybe a couple elevators too.
Ho leee crap that is AMAZING!
Drive by this wonderful place twice a day. Can't wait till it is 100% complete
I was told by a guy who keeps snakes that the skins can shrink up to 30% after they are shed.
looks like fun
3 million dollars later
bump
bump
just spent the last idk how much time watching all of this progress on your channel. so cool to see it go from messy and complicated to finally being tiled and decorated. definitely looking forward to seeing it come together!!
Will follow you very cool
I am in love with the boneyard....yay! 🎉 Rock nerds!!!❤❤
Grass....creeping red fescue....drought resistant and only gets 6 inches tall, and deep green! We used it in 4 of our homes we built, and the lawns still look great years later!! Low maintenance, they don't go dormant in a month like Kentucky blue grass. 👍❤️❤️❤️
I am in love with all the mosaic tile!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
I love this, gosh you, your husband and your family are amazing! I stopped drinking alcohol years ago, however I cook with everything not excluding wines, cognac's , burbon's, whiskey's, the flavors can be alarmingly amazing! An Air exchanger.....cool beans! Can not wait to see this huge gorgeous project when completed. I absolutely adore your creative ideas! Beautiful family, love love, love! The best to all of you! (THE REFINISHED DOORS ARE ROCKING IT, WOW!)
I love the idea of a water fountain in a house!
Do the roof first.
Dont get this. Did you win the lottery? Do you work? How much is all this going to cost?
How much land came with this?
Where did you get the money? Where did you get the time?
I am so totally completely an absolutely jealous school. I think it’s gonna turn into a castle.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
It’s going to be amazing when finished, can’t wait to see the finale
My home has 17 foot ceilings, and sip panel roof so R value very high. We don't need fans... plus fans that far up, not sure if any circulation would get down to us. I had a huge AHA about the value of putting solor panels on that flat roof of your's. And sunny, wide open space prairie. North of Fargo/Moorhead in Minnesota where I grew up looks just like that. Flat, straight roads, you can see for more than 60 miles and hear the 6 pm siren go off from 30 miles away, at least. Love that wide open space. Thanks for the view.
Good on you but I cannot imagine that this would be cheaper in anyway shape or form than just tearing it down a building a new home on the property. Would love to see the financial side for of this.
Old old school hidden rooms who knows
Hanako-san? I am just saying 😅
Looks great
Been following you for awhile and I get so excited about your latest updates. Totally looking forward to seeing the finished look. Great job 👏 ❤
How many ghosts have you interacted with so far?
That is so incredible!
